Degree Committee for the Faculty of Earth Sciences & Geography

The Internal Examiner should email their reports and recommendations to the Degree Committee Office as soon as possible after the viva so candidates are informed of the official outcome of the examination in a timely fashion. How you manage this may depend on your recommendation.

The complete set of examination reports should be recieved at least one week before the next Degree Committee meeting for inclusion on the agenda.

Please note that signatures on pre- and post-viva coversheets should be original, not electronic, so paper copies are required. If you are posting the reports we recommend you keep a scanned copy until we confirm safe receipt of the originals.

  • Pass without any correction
    • Send your reports to the Degree Committee immediately after the oral.

  • Pass subject to minor corrections
    • You may give the candidate a list of corrections directly if you wish.
    • If the candidate has made the corrections to your satisfaction prior to you submitting the reports, please sign the form PhD3, MSc3 or MPhil3 to indicate this and include it in the examination report pack you send the Degree Committee.
    • Please do not hold back the reports for more than a day or two waiting for corrections to be done - the degree can be approved conditionally and the corrections subsequently completed and approved outside of the Degree Committee meeting schedule.
    • If the corrections are approved after the reports are sent off, please email the completed corrections form to the Degree Committee.
  • Pass subject to major, substantial corrections
    • Send your reports to the Degree Committee immediately after the oral.
    • You may give the candidate the list of corrections directly if you wish.
  • Revise and resubmit, award a lower degree, not approved for any degree
    • Send your reports to the Degree Committee immediately after the oral.
    • Send the revision advice to the Degree Committee, rather than giving it to the candidate.

If you are in any doubt about what is required, please consult the Degree Committee Secretary.
